Ash Hollow - PressIn The News

Every once in a while, we're pleased to read something in the press about our wines, our winemaker, or the burgeoning wine industry in Walla Walla.

Ash Hollow Gewürztraminer - 90 points.

"Smooth, juicy and spicy with rose petal, peach and lime; crisp with balance and great style.
- The Tasting Panel, Anthony Dias Blue, April 2008

Ash Hollow Gewürztraminer

" This is perhaps the richest Northwest Gewurz I have tasted, with ripe aromas of honey, citrus, rose and honeydew melon, leading to a full-bodied palate that is complex and structured. A finish of lychee and tropical-banana notes rounds out a superb wine."
- Wines Northwest, Chuck Hill

Ash Hollow Syrah

" Year's best Syrah; One of 94 Greats from Around the World" Top-Listed Washington State Syrah.
- Wine & Spirits, February 2008

Ash Hollow Gewürztraminer

"Wow! This is really good; great body..great acidity..great length.. love the creaminess..love the complexity..a tremendous food wine. I highly recommend it!"
- Gary Vaynerchuck, wine library tv.com episode #405.

2004 Merlot

"Scented with a pretty mix of sandalwood, toasted cracker and blackberry jam, and the flavors follow into tart berry and black cherry. There's noticeable acid and some interesting grace notes, suggestive of flint and gun metal. The flavors linger pleasantly in the back of the throat. Not fleshy by any means, but it is polished and evocative; I like the suggestions of rock and iron ore that it has captured with the black cherry fruit.-P.G. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine, August 2007

2006 Gewürztraminer

Paul Gregutt of the Seattle Times, has this to say, "...its bone-dry 'traminer is better still, and not to be missed. "...The new releases cover the bases, from plate-extenders such as 100-percent varietal sauvignon blanc and pinot gris to the iconic Somanna (a blend of both), a pizza-friendly Nine Mile Red and well-made cabernet and syrah. Clearly, the best yet from this up-and-coming young producer."
- Seattle Times, June 20, 2007

2003 Merlot

Jerry Hall gave us a nice mention in his wine blog, Winewaves. "All the right ingredients have been assembled, the people, the land and the approach to achieve greatness.
- December 2006

2003 Merlot

Featured as one of the New York Times Top 10 Washington Merlots, Jill Roberts, a wine consultant working with Eric Azimov of NYT, said our merlot was "Fantastic. Gorgeous violet, blueberry, and wild raspberry nose. A very feminine palette filled with blueberry jam and brown sugar, but really well balanced with nice tannin, finishing up with a touch of game and earth. Really, really pretty; a very sexy Merlot." (Emphasis added.)
- New York Times, Dec. 13, 2006

2004 Syrah

"This winery's inaugural release is a big, earthy wine that's nicely balanced with chocolate mocha, smoke, black cherry and red raspberry. Soft, full tannins are joined by blackberry acidity...."
- San Francisco Chronicle, Oct. 27, 2006

2005 Gewürztraminer

"This is perhaps the richest Northwest Gewurz I have tasted, with ripe aromas of honey, citrus, rose and honeydew melon, leading to a full-bodied palate that is complex and structured. A finish of lychee and tropical-banana notes rounds out a superb wine."
- Chuck Hill, Wines Northwest, Oct. 19, 2006

2003 Merlot

Voted "Best of the Best" and received the People's Choice award from consumer judges during the annual Wine by the River event in Bend, OR. Both medals are on display in the tasting room.
- Sept. 30, 2006

2003 Nine Mile

“Outstanding! The fluid itself hits with herbs such as sage and thyme, adding a level of complexity to the ever-present black cherries, blackberries and marion berries. Tannins and acidity arrive in elegant fashion.”
- Wine Press Northwest, Fall 2006

2005 Gewürztraminer

“Citrus flavors, orange zest and lots of cloves float along without any of the varietal bitterness on the finish. It continues to flourish the more you get into it.”
- Wine Press Northwest, Summer 2006

2005 Somanna

“…elicits aromas of pineapple, apricot, honeydew with lychee, cloves and white peppercorn accents….finishing with a twist of lemon peel.”
- Wine Press Northwest, Summer 2006

2003 Merlot

" - Best Value-Walla Walla Merlot's to Try.” Jeff Cox of Decanter wrote of Walla Walla wine country; “Here, as on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, Merlot is making a strong claim as the region’s superior wine.” Similarities in soil and latitude, Cox wrote, give Walla Walla Merlot's a tart and sturdy structure that makes them more food-friendly than the jammier Merlot's of Napa Valley.
- Decanter, January 2006

2003 Terrassa

“Outstanding! In just its second vintage, Ash Hollow is showing its ability to craft super blends…. Opens with classy aromas of black currants, moist earth and hints of black cherries, followed by flavors of dark ripe fruit and well-managed oak. Elegant, refined tannins and proper acidity provide a perfect balance through the lengthy finish. A beautiful wine to enjoy now or over several years.”
- Wine Press Northwest, Winter 2005/2006

2003 Cabernet Sauvignon

“…shows off spicy aromas of dark fruit, chocolate, oak and black pepper, followed by flavors of ripe, dark fruit. Supple tannins allow this focused wine to shine in the glass.”
- Wine Press Northwest, Winter 2005/2006
